Informed by the manufacturing process of salt at SolanaNin in Nin, Croatia, Čelična Sol is a three-dimensional visual representation of my research into the site. The sculpture is constructed from steel and imitates a lump of salt, materials with a volatile connection.

Emerging from my ongoing exploration of the dynamic between the two, the making of Čelična Sol deliberately mirrors the slow meticulous labour of how salt is produced at SolanaNin. Its process becomes parallel to the site’s own, repetitive and shaped by time. By translating industrial methods into sculptural form, Čelična Sol allows for conversation regarding the impact industrialisation has on Earth, specifically its relationship with natural material.

Wire, Plaster, Salt

The distance between Solana, Nin, Croatia and Lion Salt Works, Cheshire, UK is approximately 1,383 miles.

Both sites introduce the manufacturing process of salt. Solana remains an active site of production, whilst Lion Salt Works operates as a heritage site. '1383' brings together ongoing research into the industrial processes of salt through sculpture and sound.

The sculptural form imitates compacted piles of salt which are stored this way to protect the material from natural elements prior to distribution. Road gritting salt acts as a protective agent. Used to create '1383', its function as a material of shielding underpins the work.

The accompanying sound is a recording of the artist's hands tracing and touching the sculpture. Gee wanted to physically engage with the material, embracing its protective and comforting qualities. The work invites reflection on the relationship between industrialisation, the human body and the Earth, with sound occupying a transitional space between the two sites.

Screenprint on steel, sound on magnetic tape

Change is a fact of life. When two volatile elements interact, they are often transformed beyond recognition. Iron and Sodium Chloride are one such coupling. When the two react and rust begins to form, irreversible erosions are made to the metal.

The coating of magnetic tape inside a cassette is made up of iron oxide. By transferring a recording of the movement of salt onto the tape, it allows the audience to experience a new form of reaction that doesn’t corrupt either property.

The use of salt throughout Milly Gee’s current works reflects on the similarities between the Earth’s ecology and the functioning of the human body. ‘-135.2’ is a continuation of ‘-135’, an installation that introduces salt from the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland and responds to the site.
